9.3.04 - Community Update
Battlefield Franchice Community Update
Mr. Smith Goes to London, Ontario
Many of you know of Eric Smith, the lead developer behind both Battlecraft 1942 and Battlecraft Vietnam. In building these tools for the Battlefield Community over the last two years, Eric has proven time and again to EA and DICE that he is a key member of the Battlefield Mod community, both in terms of his map creation (such as for Battlefield Pirates Mod) and through the excellent tools he built and supported. On occasion, Eric has spent time on-site at DICE to integrate functionality into Battlecraft, each time making a very favorable impression. EA and DICE are proud to announce that, in recognition of Eric's past contributions to Battlefield franchise and his development skills, Eric has been hired as a full time employee of DICE Canada.
Eric will be working on continued support of the Battlecraft Toolset as well as new tool development for DICE Canada's future projects.
This hiring, following as it does on the heels of DICE's announcement regarding the acquisition of Trauma Studios (the development team behind the Desert Combat Mod for Battlefield 1942) shows that this is an exciting time to be a part of the Battlefield Mod and tools community.
But there's more. Today we have big news for the burgeoning Battlefield 2 Mod Community -- the very first Battlefield 2 Mod Update!
Battlefield 2 Mod Polygon Guidelines Released
In recent weeks we have become aware of the formation of the first two Battlefield 2 Mod teams, Project Reality and Zero Hour. In order to assist these two fledgling teams and any other groups who are planning to begin development on Battlefield 2 Mods, DICE has been gracious enough to provide us with early guidelines for building Battlefield 2 content. Please note that these figures are still preliminary, and it would be advisable for teams to initially target their models to be 75-80% of the stated recommendations. Also of note is the fact that these figures are intended to get the most out of the Battlefield 2 engine, which is designed to support 100+ players in expansive environments with a mix of urban and open settings.

BFV Mod Updates
Point of Existence
The last three weeks have been an exciting time for Battlefield Vietnam players in general with the release not only of DICE's own World War II Mod but also Alpha .1 of the Point of Existence Mod. EA and DICE would like to congratulate the Point of Existence team on their release of a very well-constructed .1 version of their Battlefield Vietnam Mod. Both PoE and the World War II Mod have been big hits with the community. At any given time these days, one can find about 30% of Battlefield Vietnam players in one of these Mods.
Great work Point of Existence team! EA, DICE and the entire Battlefield community look forward to your continued output (including, from what we hear, a potential update due today).

Galactic Defense Mods
We'd also like to talk about the upcoming Galactic Defense Mod for Battlefield Vietnam. Unlike many Battlefield 1942 and Vietnam Mods, the Galactic Defense Mod takes place in a science-fiction setting, pitting the human race versus two very distinct alien species (though the first release is planned to contain only the human side) in all out far-future war. Neo3275, lead dev on the GD Mod, was gracious enough to provide us with some exclusive screens of weapons and buildings being created for GD, included below.
First up is the XMG2, a heavy machine gun carried by the Marine Support class. This baby lays down hardcore cover fire, so watch out.

Next we see the C20a Canister Rifle, the primary long range rifle of the Ghost class. Reach out at long range and touch someone.

Our final non-melee weapon is the C10 Canister Rifle, a rocket launching doozy carried by the alternate Ghost class.

The final weapon being showcased today is the knife. In the words of Neo3275 its?sharp. Looks like it to me.
